‘Films for Sawston’ – four short films (each between 6 and 10 minutes long) made by members of Sawston Cinema Club with a Studio Award from First Light (the films were facilitated by filmmakers: Peter Harmer, Simon Panrucker, Tom Martin and Carl Peck ).
Here is the blurb about the films:
With a Studio Award from First Light, young people from the Sawston Cinema Club under guidance from professional filmmakers set out to write and produce their own short films. The result of their hard work has seen four completely different but equally impressive films come to fruition.
An animated film charts a day in the life of Luke and the difficulties he faces at a school where Dork Vader is his teacher.
In ‘One Giant Step’ students from Icknield Primary School wave goodbye to Icknield Base as they embark on a voyage to Sawston Interplanetary College.
After paying a visit to ‘The Mysterinema’, film fanatic Danny’s life takes some strange turns, or perhaps it’s just another case of ‘flaming déjà vu’.
‘Fences’ is a sensitive drama that explores themes of friendship, family and the divisions that can arise between loved ones when times get hard.
Followed by: COMMON GROUND (33mins)
Three years in the making, COMMON GROUND is Littleport’s Field theatre group’s most ambitious communi ty project to date. Working alongside professional filmmaker Peter Harmer, COMMON GROUND is an evocative and haunting series of episodes that depicts Fen life in the early 1900s.
Shot around Cambridgeshire at locations including Wicken Fen and Burnt Chimney Drove, the ever-shifting and brooding essence of the Fen landscape has been met with painstaking attention to detail, beautifully composed imagery, and a dramatic musical score by local composer Lewis Newman.
With a cast made up of the local community that spans all generations, and support from local farms and businesses, COMMON GROUND is a true community endeavour and a celebration of the men, women and children whose lives were bound by the field edge. These were a generation of folk who carved out fields and farms with back-breaking labour, and whose stories are imprinted in the black soil of the fen earth.
This poetic exploration of rural life has touched many of those whom have been involved in its creation. A tribute to Fenlanders’ past, and a lasting record of Fen life for future generations, COMMON GROUND is a remarkable achievement that shines a light on the potential for communities to explore their heritage through the moving image.
Funded by Grassroots, Awards For all, and ADeC.

Jane Austen lit up the world with her words, wit and wisdom. But her life too was stoked by passion and romance. At the age of twenty she met and fell in love with Tom Lefroy and their relationship sparks a tale as real and romantic as her greatest work. Tom Lefroy is a trainee lawyer, visiting Hampshire from London, accompanied by Jane’s brother, Henry. He is handsome and intelligent and poor. Tom and Jane cross verbal swords in the local wood, they dance at the assembly rooms ball, she outplays him at cricket and he gives her Tom Jones to read. They are falling in love. But they are being watched. The couple have to make a decision. Tom suggests they elope but if they run away they stand to lose everything: family, friends and fortune. Are they ready to take that final step and offend the sense and sensibility of the age?
