Our film, Projecting the Past, is being screened tonight to an invited audience and we are getting everything ready to show all the work we’ve done.

There will be a full report tomorrow, and we hope to be on BBC Look East soon too.Â But here’s the cinema looking at its best…

The first screening of ‘Projecting the Past’ is only two weeks away, and our first public screening is just a few days later, so the team at the Cinema Archive Project is working hard to finish the film and get it ready to show. But there’s a lot of other stuff going on too, including a fabulous collage of the project to go on the wall, presentation materials, trailers and even slideshows to show how hard we’ve all worked over the months.

John managed to interview some of us during this week’s project session.

Animation

Animation has been around since filming began. Firstly you have an idea, then you make your characters (e.g. clay toys) and set. Secondly you will need an animation programme and a camera to shoot with.

In our project we have done animation about memories of people who live in Sawston.

Moving forward on the archive project

Yesterday was the last meeting of the Cinema Archive project before the end of term, though we will probably do some filming at the screening of MAMMA MIA! next week to use in our film.

While some of the group were helping Peter Harmer film members of the Sawston community, the rest of us worked with Bill Thompson to make a podcast – and here it is.Â We hope you enjoy it!

Hello, today we learnt how to editÂ our film. The film consited of many of people acting out older residents’ memories of the cinema. We learntÂ how to cut and change parts of the film, by usingÂ adobe premiereÂ software. The new equipment weÂ haveÂ learnt to use willÂ enable us to make professional looking films and footage in the very near future. In our documentary we will be presenting memories and historical conversations between Henry Morris and Henry Spicer.

The Foundation Stone

As part of our work on the archive project we have been researching the history of the cinema in Sawston. We found a web page that has a lot of information – you can read it here – and it says

The tradition of the benevolent employer was continued in the 20th century by H. G. Spicer (d. 1944), who bought the paper-mill in 1917. He and his wife gave land for the village college in 1930, and in 1932 built a theatre, later converted to a cinema and closed in 1963. (fn. 42) His wife helped to found the Sawston maternity and infant welfare centre in 1918, to which H. G. Spicer left Â£1,000. (fn. 43) By 1961 the firm of Spicers owned more than 100 houses in the area, and in 1971 it held two blocks of flats and money in trust for necessitous former employees and their dependents. (fn. 44)

Today we worked on website designs with Bill Thompson. We looked at existing websites to see which features we would like on our website. We then drew up some designs and presented these to the group.

Planning the site

Some of the suggestions for the ‘about this site’ were:

We are a group of students from Sawston Village College.Â We are investigating the history of the cinema in Sawston and the memories that people can remember from their past.

We are going to put together a film of the memories we find and place some on our website.

Hi.Â Â This is one of the members of Sawston Cinema.Â All of the members come from Sawston Village College.Â We meet up on a Thursday.

We talk about the history of the Sawston Cinema, aka Spicers Theatre.Â We have people from the earlier days of the cinema.Â They tell us about what they remember.

Site design

This project is all about bringing back the memories of the original cinema in Sawston.Â We are going to interview those with memories and record them using both audio and video.Â We shall then display them on this website.
