Our film, Projecting the Past, is being screened tonight to an invited audience and we are getting everything ready to show all the work we’ve done.

There will be a full report tomorrow, and we hope to be on BBC Look East soon too. But here’s the cinema looking at its best…

The first screening of ‘Projecting the Past’ is only two weeks away, and our first public screening is just a few days later, so the team at the Cinema Archive Project is working hard to finish the film and get it ready to show. But there’s a lot of other stuff going on too, including a fabulous collage of the project to go on the wall, presentation materials, trailers and even slideshows to show how hard we’ve all worked over the months.

John managed to interview some of us during this week’s project session.

A first look at our film

On Thursday April 29th we got to see the film we’ve been making with Pete Harmer for the first time, and it was fabulous. A lot of the Sawston residents whose memories feature in the film were in the audience, and it was great to hear them muttering ‘oh yes, I remember that…’ during the screening and to hear Tom’s excellent music score for the first time.

The big launch is on July 2nd, and there will be a public screening on July 7th.

Tonight Sawston Film Club is showing The Duchess at the cinema,but we thought it would be interesting to show you what was being screened fifty years ago, in December 1958. Here’s the programme, kindly shared with us:

We have been working on our film about the history of the cinema in Sawston for several months with Peter Harmer, and this week we will get to see what it looks like, as we’re going to show an early cut at our regular film club meeting on Thursday. Apart from being really exciting, it will also give us a chance to see what we need to change in time for the firt public screening in July.

Animation

Animation has been around since filming began. Firstly you have an idea, then you make your characters (e.g. clay toys) and set. Secondly you will need an animation programme and a camera to shoot with.

In our project we have done animation about memories of people who live in Sawston.

Moving forward on the archive project

Yesterday was the last meeting of the Cinema Archive project before the end of term, though we will probably do some filming at the screening of MAMMA MIA! next week to use in our film.

While some of the group were helping Peter Harmer film members of the Sawston community, the rest of us worked with Bill Thompson to make a podcast – and here it is. We hope you enjoy it!

Hello, today we learnt how to edit our film. The film consited of many of people acting out older residents’ memories of the cinema. We learnt how to cut and change parts of the film, by using adobe premiere software. The new equipment we have learnt to use will enable us to make professional looking films and footage in the very near future. In our documentary we will be presenting memories and historical conversations between Henry Morris and Henry Spicer.
